4 Things to ALWAYS Include on Your Bathroom Design Board

Monday, April 29, 2019

I LOVE bathrooms! Not only is this a space where you can relax and escape, you're able to incorporate natural elements with stylish design to create a tranquil oasis in your home. When it comes to designing a bathroom that will sell, I have some best practices that I keep in mind to help me design the perfect space that's not only functional, but beautiful as well. Here are my top four things to ALWAYS include on your bathroom design board.

Why Design Boards are Important

When you're creating a space in your home, you want to be able to have a clear vision, and the best way to do that is to create a design board, specific to that space. Think of this as a time for reflection. What do you want to accomplish in this space? By having a design board, you can find out which direction you want to go. Incorporate the following into your space:

  • Color

  • Texture

  • Wood

  • Metal

On your design board, you'll be able to have a clear picture of what blends with what, so that you can find the components that belong together. My key tip for you here is don't think within a box. It's kind of like thinking that you can't wear white before Easter. You can mix and match woods with metals. You can try something that you've never tried before. When you create a design board, you can see what will work together. You don't want elements of the space to be too matchy-matchy. Live a little here!

1. Consistency is Key

When designing your space, you don't necessarily need wood tones or metals to match completely, but you want them to be in the same family. My go-to practice is to pick two. For example, matte black and champagne gold can create a really sophisticated and high-end look in this space. You may want to choose matte black hardware with champagne pull handles in the tub. Tie it all up in a nice, neat bow by incorporating a light fixture that includes both colors.

2. Timeless Wins

A big trend for this year is open-concept bathrooms. This places the tub in the shower and loses the shower door to create a more open space. Although this can be functional, I say that this trend is solely dependent on personal preference. I always say that you need to do what's right for you in the space, and just because it's trendy now, doesn't mean that it's going to last. My advice...keep it timeless.

3. Don't Forget Elements of Texture

I think what people miss the most when they're designing their bathroom is texture. Add some elements of texture to the wall behind the mirror by way of tongue and groove designs or decorative tile. Wallpaper is making a comeback, but my advice is that if you want to use wallpaper in your bathroom, keep it limited to an accent wall.

4. The Right Decorative Pieces

Bathrooms need to be functional, so when you're trying to decide what decorative pieces to incorporate into this space, keep them functional. My go-to items are pretty glass jars that I can put necessities in, like q-tips and cotton balls. Not only are they pretty and elegant, they also serve a purpose. I also love to add in natural elements into this space. My favorites are bowls of shells, pieces of coral and candles. I like to create an indoor-outdoor feel in this space, and this helps me create this feel perfectly.

Your bathroom deserves to be your private getaway, nestled right in your own home! In creating a detailed design board of your styles and options, you'll be able to find the right look to complement the space. Remember, keep it functional and don't be afraid to think outside the box!
