My Favorite Home Design Trends for 2019

Friday, December 14, 2018

As I'm getting ready for the New Year, I'm getting excited for all of the new home design trends that are springing up and I can't wait to share them all with you! From floor to ceiling, homes are getting quite the makeover, and it may not be what you think. There are surprises galore for 2019, not only on the inside of the home, but the outside as well. As we prepare for another beautiful year, let's talk home design. Here are my favorite home design trends for 2019.

From Trendy to Timeless

When we think of modern, contemporary homes, we think minimalism. It seems as though intricate details have gone away, replaced by clean lines and basic details. The things is...these flip flops between West Indies and modern designs are all cyclical. As time goes on, these designs that we're seeing in homes today will be out of style, replaced by something different. We're starting to see a shift in home design trends to a more timeless appeal. Homeowners want their homes to stand the test of time, instead of being outdated every couple of years. When it comes to trendy versus timeless, timeless is pulling ahead.

Wood Detailing is Making a Comeback

Remember when homes used to have wood details throughout? You may not see that too much these days as modern design trends have minimized many aspects of the home. Timeless and cozy, wood details give a home a much more comfortable and inviting feel. We'll start to see more homes incorporating crown molding and ceiling details, such as wooden beams and tongue and groove designs to add character back into the home. Modern minimalism seems to have taken away some of our home's uniqueness, and it's exciting to see it coming back.

Shiplap has also seen a soar in popularity, mainly due to HGTV's influence on many homeowners, looking to add an updated style to their homes. We've seen smaller wood planks used in shiplap in the past, but expect to see wide planks popping up in homes. Using wide planks and tongue and groove designs create a less cluttered look in the home, while adding in that aspect of uniqueness that seemed to have been lost.

Tile Upgrades

Let's not forget about flooring! One of the hottest home design trends for 2019 is luxury vinyl tile. This special type of flooring is increasing steadily in popularity in many homes, due to the fact that it is completely waterproof and shows no grout lines. Homeowners are also opting for bigger tiles. New 48 x 24 inch tiles are taking center-stage this coming year. Homeowners and designers are brick-laying these throughout the home and are opting for a more neutral palette.

Focus on Curb Appeal

Last, but certainly not least, more homeowners are focusing on the landscaping of their property, including a combination of artificial turf and pavers to add more curb appeal to the home. Expect to see:

  • Angled pavers

  • Driveway detail

  • Backyard AND front yard oasis

  • Porches and conversation areas

Homeowners are realizing the importance of connecting with their neighbors. In Southwest Florida, I think this is due to Hurricane Irma's effect on us as a community. Having to band together, it helped us to see the beauty of community and reconnect with each other. Many homeowners are now incorporating front yard conversation areas, so they can mingle and stay connected as a community. Landscape design is definitely coming front and center in the New Year.

Fun Tip: Leave those Christmas lights up! Have you wrapped your Royal Palms in twinkling lights? Keep some of them wrapped in your backyard area, so you can create an outdoor oasis to enjoy all year-round!

Home & Design

The New Year is showing us all kinds of exciting features to include in your home. Bringing timeless design back, along with outdoor living and more details throughout the home are just a few trends to follow in 2019, and I can't wait to see what's next!
