Healthy Kids: How to Keep 'em Moving in the Summer

Summertime is here! Personally, there's nothing better than being able to spend more time with my family, enjoying the beautiful weather, long, sunny days and the (slightly) slower pace. I always have an amazing time, seeing my kids learning and growing, and I can't stress enough the importance of staying active all year round. During the school year, kids get their daily activity, but when school lets out, it can be challenging to keep them active during the lazy summer months. Here are my top tips on how to keep our healthy kids moving in the summer.

Healthy = Happy :)

Active kids seem to be happier and healthier than kids who sit around all day. Why? Activity helps kids maintain their appropriate weight and also helps with bone and muscle growth. In addition, keeping our kids moving gives them the chance to perfect a skill or learn a new one. Activity helps to develop them as individuals. It's recommended that healthy kids get about an hour of physical activity each and every day, so what are some activities that you can get your kids involved in? Let me share some ideas with you!

Enroll Kids in Summer Programs

Camps and learning enrichment programs are perfect for keeping our kids active. These programs not only keep your kids learning new things, they also incorporate physical activities that are fun and helpful for them. Our kids have the chance to learn new skills, participate in different activities and make new friends. Summer camps are easy to find at places, like:

  • Churches

  • Schools

  • Community centers

  • Museums

  • Parks

  • Gyms

Ask around or take a look at your child's school website to see what's offered if you're unsure, and sit your child down to talk about what they'd like to learn more about. By letting them help with the decision-making, they'll be more likely to get the most out of their summer camp experience.

Work Out Together

If you're like me, you know how beneficial getting a good workout in can be, and for good reason! I love the way it clears my head and keeps me fit enough to get through some of those tough home renovations. Even if you're not too experienced with exercise, it's the best time to learn together. Take your kids to a Zumba class or keep it simple with a nice, brisk walk around the neighborhood. Take advantage of your community gym, if you have one, or take your kids to the local park. There are a ton of different options to get our kids up and moving.

Home Improvement Activities

Summer is the perfect time to spruce up the home. Whether you're looking to refresh the paint in the living room or add a garden to the backyard, get your kids involved. My kids love helping me run errands when I'm working on a client's home. They get the chance to see what I do and help me make some design decisions. Ask them for their input and they'll feel more involved with the process.
