My Favorite Healthy Snacks

Healthy eating can be majorly misunderstood. Often times, it can be a struggle just to get your kids to eat a carrot at dinnertime, but incorporating healthy foods into your diet comes with so many benefits especially if you get your kids started early in life. I can't begin to tell you how precious our bodies are, and we need to treat ourselves right. When it comes to snacking, you may be tempted to give your kids a bag of chips or a handful of sugary fruit snacks, but I'm here to give you some healthy alternatives that they'll never suspect are super good for you. Here are my favorite healthy snacks.


One of my favorite tricks to get my kiddos to eat vegetables is Dr. Cowans’ powdered vegetables. Dr. Cowan is a longtime holistic physician, living and practicing in San Francisco, who specializes in helping people heal through diet and natural medicines. My kiddos never taste them and I have peace of mind that they are getting the vegetables they need each day. Here is our favorite recipe:

  • 1 cup coconut milk

  • 1 tbsp Dr. Cowan’s vegetables

  • 1 scoop chocolate organic pea protein

  • 1 banana

  • Handful of strawberries

  • Blend into yumminess!


Almonds are jam-packed with high-quality protein, and are a perfect afternoon pick-me-up. They're a good source of vitamin E and also contain antioxidants, which can aid in preventing cardiovascular disease. When it comes to the perfect snack, almonds are one of my faves. Now, keep in mind that they tend to be on the high side when it comes to calories, so be mindful of the serving size. A handful certainly goes a long way in curbing cravings and satisfying hunger. One of my favorite nut snacks to buy at the store is Bubba’s Fine Food Savory & Crunchy Righteous Ranch snack mix.

Sliced Cucumbers

I can't get enough of this crisp, light treat! Eat them plain, sprinkle lightly with salt or top them with hummus or a quality cheese to add more flavor to this super delicious treat. Cucumbers have many benefits, including:

  • Supporting a healthy heart

  • Helping to stay hydrated

  • Reducing inflammation

  • Improving skin tone and complexion

These treats are packed with helpful nutrients and not only taste amazing, but are so good for you. They're an easy, quick snack for when you're on the move also!


Did you know that popcorn is the only snack that is 100% whole grain? This super grain is rich in fiber and contains many antioxidants. This can be a really satisfying and healthy snack, but beware of your toppings. Buttery concoctions are not what I mean when I consider popcorn a healthy snack. Steer clear of that and try sprinkling some sea salt, cinnamon or parmesan cheese on top...less is more with this healthy snack. Our favorite popcorn is our house is Skinny Pop. Anyone else have an addiction to skinny popcorn?

Apple Slices with Nut Butter

Surely you've heard the phrase “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” and I'm here to say that apples are rich in fiber, antioxidants and essential nutrients. This powerhouse fruit is an important source of dietary fiber and helps to reduce the risk of developing certain health problems, such as cancer, hypertension and heart disease. Try your apple slices with a little bit of almond or peanut butter on top for a snack that's packed with protein. Plus, since apples are broken down slowly by the digestive system, you'll feel fuller longer, and have more energy to power through the rest of your day. Speaking of nut butters, Trader Joe's has the BEST sunflower butter. I can send it with the girls to school because it is not a nut, it is considered a seed.

Cottage Cheese

Topped with fruit or a vegetable, like delicious bell peppers, this snack is sure to make you smile. Rich in protein and calcium, cottage cheese is a go-to snack when I need something fast and satisfying. Plus, it's packed with important nutrients, which aid in overall good health.

Healthy Snacking

These snacks have become staples in my house. Not only are they delicious, they have so many health benefits. So, the next time your kids are going for a sugary snack, try some of these ideas. You'll be glad you ditched the pre-packaged stuff for the real deal.
