How to Make Sunset an Event at Your Home

Friday, July 20, 2018

If you ever saw the movie Wild with Reese Witherspoon you may remember this line:

"There's a sunrise and sunset every day. You can choose to be there for it. You can put yourself in the way of beauty." Cheryl Strayed

If you've never witnessed a Southwest Florida sunset, you are missing out on something spectacular! Not only are we blessed to live in such an amazing place, we get rewarded each night with some of the most fantastic sights that Mother Nature can offer. It's true, a Southwest Florida sunset can't be beat, and that's why I'm here to help you plan the perfect sunset watch party for any night of the week (weather permitting!). Here are my tips on how to make sunset an event at your home. It deserves to be.

Why Sunsets are Simply the Best

Not only are sunsets beyond gorgeous, they provide a chance to get outside and enjoy nature, not to mention that wonderful salty breeze off of the Gulf. Sunsets inspire and help you reflect on the day and what's important to you. Most of all, it's a time for pause and to simply enjoy life. The colors, the moment, all of it come together into perfection. It's no wonder why each night, you can hear a round of applause from any beach. Make it an event at home with my quick and simple tricks.

Find the Right Spot

The first thing I recommend is to scout out a place in your home that provides you with the best possible view of the sunset. It could be your lanai or the backyard, or even right in front of your house. Wherever it is, find it. Choose the spot that's going to give you the best advantage for the wow factor that our nightly sunsets bring to us, and start making it a comfortable place for your family and friends to relax and reflect on the day.

Make It Comfortable

Who says we just have to stand there while we watch the sunset? Make it an event! Add fluffy outdoor cushions, a picnic blanket or cushy chairs to the backyard, or tie up your hammock to the trees to create the ultimate comfy sunset watching spot. The key here is to have a spot for everyone to go and be comfortable, so that you can take in the sunset while enjoying each other's company. It's more than just the sunset, it's about connecting with each other.

Plan It Accordingly

Now, of course sunset isn't at the exact same time every night, and depending on what time of the year it is, sunset time can be drastically early or late. If it's an early sunset, consider having dinner outside in the backyard or on the lanai. Maybe have your dinner picnic-style, while you take in the breathtaking backdrop as it illuminates the sky. If sunset is well after dinner, incorporate a fun dessert that your family can enjoy while they watch. Fun treats to serve include:

  • S'mores

  • Ice cream

  • Fruit parfait

  • Cake

  • Popsicles

Or even enjoy a glass of wine as you wind down from your busy, whirlwind of a day. No matter what, make it fun and enjoyable for everyone, because sunsets are beautiful and should be shared together!

Make It Special

Taking time to appreciate nature's wonders is important, and appreciating it with family and loved ones regularly is unmatched. Take time to appreciate the little things, the beautiful things in life with each other. It doesn't take much to enjoy a good Southwest Florida sunset, so grab your family, head outside and take it all in.
